Aphrodisiacs, Friend or Foe?
Aphrodisiacs have been around nearly as long as humans have. Each culture has its own history of what they believe works magic in the bedroom, adding some literal spice to love lives. There are wives’ tales, and some that actually work. When you’re in the market for an aphrodisiac, how can you find out whether they work or not? Some are bogus marketing. The rest can be supplements or actual food. Here’s a breakdown of what doesn’t work, what does and what you might want to try for fun, in the three main aphrodisiac categories:

The Rarer, the Better
In many cultures, if something is hard to get it must be worth it. The Chinese practice of using rhino horns ground up into a powder for sexual prowess is well-known. Unfortunately, it’s also helped the rhino towards extinction. Other (tasty) treats include dried black ants, dried lizard or dried European beetle ground up. The last you might be familiar with: it’s also known as Spanish Fly. It won’t do much more than irritate your dates’ urethra, though, with a burning sensation. Probably not the response you’re looking for.
If It Looks the Part…

Anything that naturally grows or exists that looks similar to the sexual organs is automatically thought to enhance performance and/or interest. The aphrodisiacs that fall into this category are: asparagus, celery, bananas, carrots and avocados (look at how they grow on trees, and you’ll see why). Clams could possibly also fall into this category, although they do have a valid turn-on because of the high amounts of zinc.
It Reminds Me Of Sex
Any foods that re-create the same sensations you have when you’re having sex fall into this category. Some of the more famous are chilies and peppers, or the ‘natural’ supplements like ginkgo or yohimbe. The only problem with these, beyond the sweating, is that they can speed up your heart-rate and make you physically uncomfortable, with sex being the last thing on your mind until you recover.

There are some natural aphrodisiacs that are safe. Dark chocolate, strawberries, maca, pomegranate and dried pumpkin seeds are a few. Basically, anything that’s high in zinc naturally is a winner. The best aphrodisiac of all, however, is the imagination. Fueling a healthy fantasy is the best way to keep the home fires burning for you and your partner, though experimenting with food can be a great starter before moving on to the main dish.
